What I Offer
My name is Jane Topkin and I am a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist. I am also a fully accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (IACP).
I believe that no two clients are the same and thus utilise an integrative approach, with a strong foundation in Humanistic (mainly Person-Centered therapy) and Choice Theory/Reality Therapy. This means that while I may draw on ideas and techniques from a variety of modes of therapy depending on the needs of the client, the foundation of my work is well-rooted in the Humanistic and Choice Theory/Reality Therapy modalities. Humanistic (Person-Centered) therapy aims to help people to fully accept themselves by delivering an empathic, non-judgemental and genuine therapeutic environment and believes that every person has an in-built capacity to grow and reach their potential in life. Choice Theory/Reality Therapy operates from a premise that all we do is make choices and our behavior is geared towards satisfying our basic needs. It helps you begin to make more need-satisfying choices and taking charge of your life.
Our fit together is very important. The relationship that you and I develop in therapy can nurture and support your growth. It is the foundation of successful therapy and will ensure the development of a safe space for you to talk and to be heard.
I believe that every client is unique, such as the problem situations that they present with. Working with a good therapist gives you a confidential space where you are listened to and are accepted for who you are. Together, at your own pace, we can explore what is troubling you. I aim to offer an empathic, unconditional, non-judgemental, safe space where you can be yourself.
The following is a list of issues which I am not sufficiently qualified to work with and which another practitioner or organization may better help you with:
Where there is an active addiction or recovery issue;
Working with a specific psychosexual issue;
Working with children.
